Utility profile

Check peaks and coincidence, not only daily totals

Heating, cooling, filling and CIP may create short peak demands that exceed average consumption. A utility schedule should show each major user, operating mode and simultaneous load. Confirm both capacity and quality at the agreed connection point.

Where heat recovery or water reuse is proposed, define the hygienic boundary, buffer, controls and fallback mode. Savings should be calculated from the actual operating schedule rather than assumed from a generic diagram.

Automation

Write the control narrative before software acceptance

The narrative should describe modes, sequences, permissives, alarms, manual operations, product routing, cleaning recipes and data records. It gives operators, process engineers and programmers one reference for factory and site testing.

Minimum control handover

  • Approved functional description and cause-and-effect logic
  • I/O and instrument list with ranges and alarm values
  • Recipe and user-access strategy
  • Backup, restore and change-control procedure
  • Operator and maintenance training records
